If you’re suffering through the day feeling heavy and sluggish, you may be interested to learn that certain foods can cause bloating. Bloating is the result of gas or fluid accumulating in your GI tract, or when bacteria in your large intestine have a hard time breaking down food.

So what common foods might be causing this?

  1. Raw cruciferous vegetables

Veggies such as kale, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli can all cause bloating and gas when eaten in their raw form – because they are very high in fiber, which can be difficult for your body to break down.

What to eat instead:
These veggies provide your body with many essential vitamins and minerals, so cutting them out of your diet isn’t the solution. Instead, try steaming them – helping to soften their fiber and making them easier to digest.

  1. Apples

Apples are full of nutrients, but are also high in fructose and fiber – both of which make it difficult to digest for some.

What to eat instead:
Try replacing your apples with other fruits such as berries, or try cooking your apples to help increase their digestibility.

  1. Sweeteners

Fructose-rich sweeteners such as sugar alcohols, high fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, brown sugar, evaporated cane juice, and cane syrup all have been linked to promoting bloating, gas, and other digestive symptoms.

What to eat instead:

You’re better off sweetening your food with spices such as cinnamon, pure green leaf Stevia, or flavored extracts to avoid digestive issues from processed sweeteners!

  1. Grains

Grains such as oats, rice, and wheat can be high in fiber – which can lead to certain digestive issues.

What to eat instead:
Quinoa can be a substitute, as it is actually more of a seed then a grain – which would be a good replacement for rice or oats in recipes.

  1. Dairy

Dairy is high in lactose, which is a milk sugar, that leads to bloating and gas. Many people have a hard time digesting lactose in the body. Casein is also found in dairy, which has been shown to promote inflammation in the gut and further worsen digestive issues.

What to eat instead:

Coconut milk and nut milks such as almond and cashew milk are all high in essential vitamins and minerals – and are a great alternative to dairy.
