Although popular, protein bars, shakes, and other supplements aren’t the best way to get in your protein. A bar or shake may seem like an easier way to get your recommended amount of protein, but you’re better off getting those nutrients from real food.
Why do we need protein in the first place?
Proteins are essential nutrients found in every cell in the body and are used for growth and maintenance, including tissue and muscle repair. Proteins aid blood clotting, fluid balance, buffering, vision, and transportation of vital substances through your body. Protein can also be metabolized for energy when carbohydrate and fat are in short supply.
Getting in your protein through bars is convenient when on the go, but in reality they are sometimes not much healthier than a candy bar!
Combined with the high calories, excess sugar and suspect ingredients, high-protein bars and shakes will leave you feeling hungry and unsatisfied. You’ll be better off choosing an actual meal over a quick fix.
So where should we be getting our sources of protein?
A well-rounded, nutrient-dense meal will leave you feeling satisfied and energized with the variety of flavors it provides, and for fewer calories!
A few good sources of protein include meat, poultry, fish, and eggs that will all play a role in revving your fat-burning metabolism and reducing the hunger pangs that can lead to an attack on the “healthy” snack aisle during your next trip to the grocery store!
