Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean skipping out on social events or time with family and friends. Follow these tips and learn how to navigate restaurant menus so you can stay social AND eat smart!

  1. Don’t drink your calories

If you’re already eating out, there’s no reason to waste even more calories by drinking them. Swap out sugary beverages such as soda, teas, or alcohol with plain H2O and save the calories for your meal.

  1. Establish portion control

Restaurants are known for their oversized portions. Remember that just because your meal is on a single plate, does not mean it is a single serving! Ask for a to-go box so you can portion out a reasonable serving and save the rest for another meal.

  1. Fill up on foods other than carbs

By placing an emphasis on proteins and high-fiber veggies, you’re less likely to overindulge in creamy carbs and sugary desserts. These proteins and veggies help to slow down digestion, leaving you feeling fuller faster.

  1. Make smart choices

Some people are hesitant to be picky or ask for a customized meal, but you shouldn’t settle on your order when YOU are the one paying. Request low-fat cooking options such as baking, roasting, or grilling and ask that they skip the oil and butter. And remember that just because a bowl of chips or a plate of bread is in front of you – doesn’t mean you have to eat it! Skip out on the pre-meal snacks.
